    Schriesheim, Sussman to discuss new contract

    Argonne Director Alan Schriesheim and Arthur Sussman, University of Chicago vice-president for Argonne, will discuss university's new contract with the U.S. Department of Energy for the operation of Argonne at a special two-session Argonne Topics seminar on Monday, June 19.

    Both sessions will be held in the Argonne-East Building 213 Cafeteria. All employees whose work schedules permit are invited to attend.

    * A session for division directors, department heads, program managers and senior scientists and engineers will be held from 9:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

    * A session for all other employees will be held from 2:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

    The new, performance-based contract was signed May 24 in ceremonies at Argonne-East. The new contract is designed to reward results and eliminate micromanagement. It has been structured to give DOE flexibility in adapting programs and activities at Argonne to support DOE's Strategic Alignment Initiative.

    Colloquium to offer glimpse of year 2025

    An upcoming Director's Special Colloquium will provide a glimpse of the world 30 years in the future.

    The speaker will be Joe Coates, president of Coates & Jarrett, Inc., a Washington, D.C. research organization dedicated to the study of the future. His talk, "The World of 2025 As Shaped by Science and Technology," will begin at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, in Argonne-East's Building 362 auditorium.

    All employees whose schedules permit are invited to attend the colloquium.

    Coates' firm has consulted with many of the nation's top businesses, government agencies and professional and public interest groups.

    Coates lectures to about 100 groups a year about trends and future developments. He is the co-author of several books and many journal articles and papers on the subject.

    A former industrial chemist, he holds 19 patents and teaches graduate courses at George Washington University on technology and the future.

    Argonne Club seeks picnic help

    The Argonne Club needs 80 volunteers to help at this year's annual Argonne Picnic on Saturday, July 8.

    Volunteers must be more than 16 years old and will assist with games, selling tickets and T-shirts, greeting picnickers and helping on the hayride.

    Gates will open at 10 a.m. Events will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the picnic ends at 4 p.m.

    All volunteers will receive a free T-shirt. T-shirts also will be on sale for $8 the day of the picnic. Interested volunteers should call Fred Onesto (APO) at 2-5260.

    Sigma Xi honors downstate teacher

    James Sparks of Pana High School, Pana, Ill., has been honored by the Argonne chapter of Sigma Xi, the national scientific honor society, for outstanding achievement in science teaching.

    A committee of Argonne scientists selects the awardee from nominations submitted by school principals. Sparks received a cash award and engraved plaque at a recent Sigma Xi annual banquet.

    A resident of Shelbyville, Ill., Sparks has taught physics, chemistry and computer science, astronomy and principles of technology at Pana High School for 17 years. He also teaches summer science classes.

    He has been science department head, which includes organizing the school's science fair, for 14 years. He is also unit technology coordinator, Junior Engineering Technological Society team advisor and Varsity Academic Bowl coach.

    In 1987, Sparks was chosen as one of 50 chemistry teachers in the nation to attend the Woodrow Wilson Institute at Princeton University, where he became a master teacher.

    Cafeteria tornado shelters listed

    Although most severe thunderstorms strike in late afternoon, midsummer heat or a cold front can spawn tornadoes at any time of day -- even during lunchtime.

    The large free-span roof of Argonne-East's Building 213 Cafeteria makes the main dining area a poor tornado shelter, said Lawrence McCure, Argonne's Food Service and Travel Manager.

    If a tornado warning is issued during lunch hours, a public address system will inform those in the cafeteria. Marriott employees will direct cafeteria patrons to shelter areas (Diagram 17K bytes).

    Building 213's tornado shelter areas are:

    * Basement locker rooms

    * Dock area stairwell

    * kitchen area (not the serving area)

    * Supply and storage rooms on the southeast corner of the building

    * Bathrooms near the entrance.

    Four old buildings to be demolished

    Four older buildings at Argonne-East -- buildings 25, 605, 822 and 823 -- are set to be demolished early this summer.

    The demolition will clear space for future activities, said Lawrence Moran (PFS). Demolition should be completed by the end of July.

    The buildings are all obsolete or too costly to make habitable, Moran said.

    Buildings 822 and 823 are Quonset huts built when Argonne moved to its present site about 1950.

    HR plans summer software classes

    Human Resources will hold classes in popular business software for users of Macintosh and IBM-compatible computers through the summer.

    Each class costs $150, and will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Argonne-East's Building 362, Room E188. For more information, call ext. 2-3410.

    IBM-compatible classes

    * Access 2.0 Fundamentals, 7/11/95

    * Fundamental WordPerfect 6.0 for Windows, 7/12/95

    * PowerPoint 4.0 Fundamentals, 8/15/95

    * Excel 5.0 Fundamentals, 8/16/95

    Macintosh classes

    * Mac Excel 5.0 Tools & Techniques, 7/26/95

    * Powerpoint 4.0 for Macintosh, 7/27/95

    * A class in English as a Second Language, course 534, is tentatively scheduled for June 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Building 221, Room A261.

    Pregnancy seminar rescheduled

    A seminar on "Coping with Stress During Pregnancy" will be held Wednesday, June 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Argonne-East's Building 202, Room E-126 (ESH Training Room).

    The seminar, part of a March of Dimes series on maternity wellness and prenatal care, was postponed earlier in the year.

    Argonne and DOE employees and interested family members are welcome to attend.

    New form eases transfers

    Temporary employees no longer have to submit a new application or resume to apply for posted openings.

    Instead, all paid, regular or temporary, employees will be required to submit a Transfer Application Form (HR-6) within the designated deadline.

    The revised form will be in stock by mid-June. For more information, call ext. 2-2974.

    Magnetism is main attaction at MSD workshop

    A theory workshop on "Magnetism in Multilayered and Reduced Dimensional Systems" will take place June 19-23 in Argonne-East's Building 212, Conference Room A157.

    Speakers at the workshop will include Robert Birgeneau, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Peter A. Grünberg, KFA Jülich, Germany; Patrick Bruno, U.Paris-Sud, France; Daniel Stoeffler, U. Strasbourg, France; Sadamichi Maekawa, Nagoya U., Japan; and Peter M. Levy, New York University.
