Taxonomic Comments | Epioblasma is comprised of several recognized forms (torulosa, gubernaculum, rangiana, and cincinnatiensis), but it is not clear whether these forms represent ecophenotypic variation, true subspecies, or a species complex. The entire species group exhibits considerable ecophenotypic variation. Epioblasma was formerly placed in the genera Unio, Truncilla, and Dysnomia. This entity may have been part of the Epioblasma torulosa complex (see Watters, 1995).
