The City of St. Louis to receive HUD St. Louis Shining Star for its Fair Housing Initiative

ST. LOUIS, MO - As part of the HUD St. Louis Field Office's ongoing efforts to promote the Department's mission and highlight outstanding HUD-funded housing, community and economic development initiatives, Roy Pierce, Field Office Director, presented shining stars to its top community partners at the 4th Annual Community Partnership Awards, held Wednesday, December 10, 2003 in St. Louis, Missouri. Pierce recognized eight partners at this year's event.

Recipients were the City of St. Louis for its fair housing ordinance that gives the City the power to investigate and enforce fair housing statutes; the City of Jefferson Housing Authority for its innovative housing production partnership with the Jefferson City School District; General Services Administration-Downtown St. Louis Field Office for its outstanding contributions to the First Downtown St. Louis Federal Homebuyers Fair, June 2003; KOMAN Properties for its development of the $7 million MLK Plaza in north St. Louis; Mary 1 Enterprises, LLC for its sales and development of new single family homes throughout the City of St. Louis; Pinela Communications for its community homeowners' education and outreach initiatives in the Hispanic Community; St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association for its development and implementation of the St. Louis Regional Faith-Based Institute; and the Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church for its uniquely-design $4 million elderly housing development in north St. Louis. Collectively, these organizations have used approximately $35 million in HUD and private funds to address and resolve housing and economic issues plaguing various areas of eastern Missouri. It is through these organizations and other HUD partners that HUD achieves its national and local performance goals.

HUD is the nation's housing agency committed to increasing homeownership, particularly among minorities, creating affordable housing opportunities for low-income Americans, supporting the homeless, elderly, people with disabilities and people living with AIDS. The Department also promotes economic and community development as well as enforces the nation's fair housing laws. More information about HUD and its programs is available on the Internet.
