The City
of St. Louis to receive HUD St. Louis Shining Star for its Fair Housing InitiativeST.
LOUIS, MO - As part of the HUD St. Louis Field Office's ongoing efforts to promote
the Department's mission and highlight outstanding HUD-funded housing, community
and economic development initiatives, Roy Pierce, Field Office Director, presented
shining stars to its top community partners at the 4th Annual Community Partnership
Awards, held Wednesday, December 10, 2003 in St. Louis, Missouri. Pierce recognized
eight partners at this year's event. Recipients were the City of St. Louis
for its fair housing ordinance that gives the City the power to investigate and
enforce fair housing statutes; the City of Jefferson Housing Authority for its
innovative housing production partnership with the Jefferson City School District;
General Services Administration-Downtown St. Louis Field Office for its outstanding
contributions to the First Downtown St. Louis Federal Homebuyers Fair, June 2003;
KOMAN Properties for its development of the $7 million MLK Plaza in north St.
Louis; Mary 1 Enterprises, LLC for its sales and development of new single family
homes throughout the City of St. Louis; Pinela Communications for its community
homeowners' education and outreach initiatives in the Hispanic Community; St.
Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association for its development and implementation
of the St. Louis Regional Faith-Based Institute; and the Friendly Temple Missionary
Baptist Church for its uniquely-design $4 million elderly housing development
in north St. Louis. (Photos
of all award winners) Collectively, these organizations have used approximately
$35 million in HUD and private funds to address and resolve housing and economic
issues plaguing various areas of eastern Missouri. It is through these organizations
and other HUD partners that HUD achieves its national and local performance goals.
HUD is the nation's housing agency committed to increasing homeownership,
particularly among minorities, creating affordable housing opportunities for low-income
Americans, supporting the homeless, elderly, people with disabilities and people
living with AIDS. The Department also promotes economic and community development
as well as enforces the nation's fair housing laws. More information about HUD
