Olympics Transportation Overview

Europe - Italy
November 21 2005

Torino mapThe Olympic Committee has imposed a series of limitations to traffic circulation in the Olympic area. These restrictions will enable public transportation vehicles to run smoothly to and from Olympic events, will facilitate the circulation of vehicles owned by local residents and used by hotels, and will help to ensure the security of the area.

Permits and Road Blocks

From February 8-27, mountain roads within the area of competition venues will only be accessible by drivers holding special permits. These permits are available, by application, to residents and homeowners, hotel or property managers, guests in accommodations, employees, regular suppliers, doctors, public utility services, and others at the discretion of the ATL2 (local tourist agency). Without a permit, it will NOT be possible to travel during this time in the restricted areas. Permanent road blocks will be in place to enforce the restrictions, and variable road blocks will be used in case of heavy traffic, emergencies, or when car parks are full.

The permanent road blocks are located:

 - in Cesana, upstream of the roundabout located at the junction between the trunk road Ss24 and the byroad Ssp 23
 - in Pragelato, upstream of the roundabout to access the town of Ruà.
 - in Oulx, before the town of San Marco on the byroad Sp214
 - in Bardonecchia, before the town of Melezet on the byroad Sp216.

The variable road blocks are located:
 - in Usseaux, town of Pourrieres
 - in Roure, town of Roreto Chisone
 - in Bardonecchia, on the trunk road Ss335 near the access routes to the inhabited area.

All mountain venues will still be accessible via the Dorsale free mountain service. It is a free bus that runs daily from January 30 to February 27. The Dorsale provides links to all mountain sites that will be subjected to restrictions during the Games. Click here for a Dorsale service map (.pdf format).

Additionally, transportation patterns in the city of Turin will be altered for the Games. Some city lanes will be reserved for official Olympics vehicles and public transportation.
