Bacterial diseases in 2718 hospitalized HIV-patients.

Objective: To evaluate the incidence and kind of bacterial diseases in hospitalized HIV-patients. Patients And Method: We retrospectively reviewed 2718 HIV patients admitted in our Hospital for 78 months (August, 1989-Jan, 1996). Results: We found 1119 bacterial diseases (1119/2718 = 41.16%) with the following kinds: 1) Pneumonia with/without empyema 365; 2) Respiratory infections 165; 3) Endocarditis 161; 4) Bacteremia with/without shock 112; 5) Cellulitis, subcutaneous abscesses and phlebitis 81; 6) Urinary tract infections 52 (11 of them: acute pyelonephritis); 7) Sinusitis 52; 8) Gastro-intestinal infections 35; 9) Cholangitis/ cholecystitis 21; 10) Peritonitis 12; 11) Otitis 11; 12) Arthritis 10; 13) Sexually transmitted diseases 10 (pelvic inflammatory disease 6, syphilis 3, urethritis 1); 12); 13); 14) Lung abscess 7; 15) Perianal abscess 6; 16) Myositis 3; 17) Others 13 (epididymitis 3, meningitis 1, osteomyelitis 2, perirectal abscess 1, myocardial abscess 1, chondritis 1, panophtalmitis 1, pericarditis 1, paravertebral abscess 1, cervical abscess 1). Mycobacterias were excluded. Conclusions: 1) Bacterial diseases are common in hospitalized HIV-patients. 2) Pneumonia is the most frequent infection. 3) Endocarditis and other infections, such as cellulitis and subcutaneous abscesses, are common in areas with high prevalence in IVDU.
