This is Me

I was born in Boston, MA, where I lived in Belmont for a few years before my parents decided to move to Long Island, NY. They still live in the small village of Bellport in the town of Brookhaven on the south shore. I go back to visit whenever I have breaks, and sometimes if I'm lucky, my older sister Rachel will be there. Rachel finished up her Master of Science Education degree at Vanderbilt University, and is teaching kids about science in Massachusetts (8th grade). (If she ever gets a web page, I'll be sure to link to it.) My mother works at the South Country Library, and is the editor of their bimonthly newsletter. My father is a physicist at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) Project at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

I went to high school at Bellport High in the South Country School District, graduating in 1993. During that time I played bassoon with the Long Island Youth Orchestra, a group that plays at Long Island University, C.W. Post campus during the school year, and tours the world during the summers. During my two years (1993-4) with the group we went to New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Brasil, and South Africa.

Then I went off to college. I went to Amherst College in Amherst, MA for freshman and sophomore years. I had a great time there. I met lots of interesting people and did a lot of interesting things. I rowed all four semesters, worked on a non-partisan opinions and literary magazine (Prism), and made a lot of friends. But it was too small. So I transferred to Cornell University. I majored in Geological Sciences, and I wrote a thesis during my senior year.

I am now working for General Sciences Corporation at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, in Greenbelt, Maryland. I work in the Hydrological Sciences Branch (Code 974) where I am a Scientific Programmer. For mental and physical health reasons, I play in the Goddard Ultimate Frisbee Club here on site, which is sponsored by the Goddard Employee's Welfare Association (GEWA). It's not a competitive bunch, and we have fun. If you're into that sort of thing, you might find me playing with the more competitive (but still pick-up) group at Arundel High School in Gambrills on Saturdays. Also, on some rare occasions, you might see me playing ultimate at the Greenbelt Sunday Pickup games.

For the past 3 years, I've been part of the Goddard Music And Drama Club (MAD), and have played the bassoon in the pit orchestra for their production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, The Music Man and Damn Yankees. I also worked stage crew for their recent production of The Importance of Being Earnest. This spring, I'm going on stage for the first time since high school, and performing in MAD's "Evening of One Acts". I'm playing the part of Rupert in Booth Tarkington's The Trysting Place, and two minor roles in Lucille Fletcher's Sorry Wrong Number. Showtimes and ticket prices for the current productions are on the MAD site.

And now, what you've all been waiting for! Well, I have anyway. I'm going back to school. I've accepted Penn State's offer of admission to their Ph.D. program in Geosciences. I'll be starting there in August, but for to get into the feel of things, I'm going to spend July doing field work in Nepal with Doug Burbank.
