This system heats water for the kitchen, bathing, and laundry facilities, supplying 7.2 billion Btus of thermal energy annually to the 5100-inmate prison. District systems such as this one will generally not include storage - contributing only when they are actually operating - so will meet a smaller portion of the load than the 50% to 60% typical for systems including storage. The system is part of the SI Program's Solar Process Heat Monitoring Project begun in 1994.
