Water Consumption of Evaporative Cooling Systems

Abstract: In considering the virtues and debits of evaporative cooling units relative to refrigerated air conditioning systems, water consumption is pertinent. Since evaporative cooling units consume water and work best in arid environments where water can be at a premium, excessive water consumption could represent additional financial and environmental penalties. This study compares water consumption necessary for refrigerated air conditioning air cooling to water requirements for different evaporative cooling approaches for different conditions.

This analysis is not intended to be comprehensive. It does consider some worst case conditions and place them into perspective. A more comprehensive study would consider realistic seasonal water consumption using ASHRAE Bin Weather Data.
