FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 28, 1990 FTC CHARGES CALIFORNIA CREDIT REPAIR COMPANY MISREPRESENTED "CREDIT REPAIR" SERVICES; SEEKS PERMANENT INJUNCTION AND CONSUMER REDRESS The Federal Trade Commission has charged NCS Credit Network, Inc, ("NCS"), its president, Blessing Ahuruonye, and its manager, Hyacinth Ahuruonye, with misrepresenting their credit repair services. The FTC has asked a federal court to prohibit such misrepresentations in the future. According to the complaint, NCS deceptively claimed that it could improve consumers' credit histories by removing adverse information from their credit reports and could obtain for them major credit cards regardless of their credit histories. The complaint charges that NCS told consumers that it: -- obtains credit cards for most clients; -- removes or updates derogatory information such as bankruptcies, repossessions, judgments, liens, charge- offs and other evidence of nonpayment from most clients' credit profiles, thereby improving the clients ability to obtain credit; and -- refunds fees for its credit improvement and credit services if clients are not satisfied with the services. NCS Credit Network, which originated as Nationwide Credit Services, is based in San Francisco, California. The FTC filed its complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, on December 21. The Commission files a complaint when it has reason to believe that the law has been or is being violated and it appears to the Commission that the proceeding is in the public interest. The complaint is not a finding or ruling that the defendant has actually violated the law. The case will be decided by the court. Copies of the complaint are available from the FTC Public Reference Branch, Rm. 130, 6th & Pennsylvania Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20580; TTY 202-326-2222; TTY 202-326-2502. # # # MEDIA CONTACT: Sheila Smaw, Office of Public Affairs, 202-326-2180 STAFF CONTACT: Isabelle M.
