Doing Business in Peru and the Andean Region

Why Do Business In/With Peru?
The U.S. began the first round of negotiations with Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador for a U.S. - Andean Free Trade Agreement in May 2004. Quoting former U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick, "we are delighted that the Andean countries want to work with us to remove barriers for our farmers, workers, exporters and businesses." The U.S. has also proposed a $54 million loan for a micro financing initiative in the Andean countries through the Overseas Private Investment Corporation.

In 2004, U.S. exports to Peru almost reached $2 billion. The stock of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Peru in 2002 was $3.2 billion. The four Andean countries collectively represent a market of over $7 billion for U.S. exports, and are home to over $8 billion in U.S. foreign direct investment. Lastly, the The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) has reduced tariffs on 1,111 items, mostly capital goods and certain industrial inputs. Ninety-six percent of 1,070 sub items... will subsequently pay a 4% tariff.
