Summary The MOOS Upper-Water-Column Science Experiment (MUSE) incorporates within the framework of MOOS a number of upper-water-column and benthic science investigations, culminating in a joint Monterey Bay field experiment in August of 2000. The core science problem behind MUSE, the evolution of biological communities across nutrient-rich upwelling fronts, ... encompasses the investigative areas of the following collaborative research groups:
1.Johnson/Chavez (natural iron enrichment); 2.Chavez (biogeochemical response to coastal upwelling); 3.Scholin/Delong (monitoring of picoplankton in ocean fronts); 4.Robison/Hamner (physics and biology of ocean fronts); 5.Barry/Buck (benthic production under upwelling zones); 6.Ryan/Chavez (frontal processes and vertical flux along filaments); 7.Paull (iron from seafloor venting); 8.Matthews/Davis (optimal sampling and estimation of episodic events); 9.Paduan/Shulman (modeling of ocean fronts); 10.Haddock/Moline/Widder (bioluminescence from zoo- and phytoplankton).
As the first in a series of upper-water-column field experiments, MUSE represents only one part of the long-term MOOS science plan whose overarching purpose is to investigate the interrelationships between the physics, chemistry, and biology of coastal upwelling systems. The MOOS science plan calls for the deployment in 2001 of a full-water-column observing system in Monterey Bay, comprising surface, benthic, and mobile (AUV) instrumentation nodes. The system will resolve processes that inject iron and nutrients into upwelling filaments and provide long-term observational information about the upwelling system as a whole. The absence of this observing system during the MUSE experiment requires that MBARI emphasizes other technologies such as AUV's to resolve short-term episodic processes associated with coastal upwelling systems.
