Library of Congress Presents Reading of Defiant Muse: Hebrew Women's Poetry

Poets Shirley Kaufman and Galit Hasan-Rokem will read from their own and others' poems in Defiant Muse: Hebrew Feminist Poets from Antiquity to the Present (The Feminist Press, 1999) at noon November 12 in the West Dining Room, sixth floor, James Madison Memorial Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E.

Shirley Kaufman, who lives in Israel, is the author of seven books of poetry, all of which have been published in the United States. Ms. Kaufman's poems have appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, the American Poetry Review, Lilith, The Atlantic Monthly and The Nation. Among her honors are the United States Award of the International Poetry Forum and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation.

Ms. Hasan-Rokem is the Max and Margarethe Grunwald Professor of Folklore at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. An internationally acclaimed poet, translator and scholar, she has published two books of poetry and five nonfiction works. She is the literary editor of the Palestine-Israel Journal.

The reading is co-sponsored by the Office of Scholarly Programs, and the Hebraic Section of the Library of Congress and the Embassy of Israel.
