WASHINGTON- Congressman Lee Terry issued the following statement after voting against The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, H.R. 1. The bill passed 244-188.

“Once again this bill was sold as the only answer to our nation’s economic crisis.  This bill bloats government and piles on to our already suffocating national debt.  To get our country out of the current economic catastrophe we must boost business incentives and create jobs immediately. ”

“The two things dragging down our economy are the sinking housing market and the auto industry woes and this bill doesn’t do a darn thing to help sell one home or purchase a new car.”

“We need to put the money back in the hands of the people, not government in the form of substantial tax cuts for America’s families and businesses and we need them now, not 2 to 4 years from now.  I also think we could have done more to improve our highway infrastructure and this bill only included a measly 3 percent to do that.”
