The Atlanta Port was designated on March 4, 1996, making it one of the newer designated wildlife ports
in the United States.  The City of Atlanta, local brokers, and importers/exporters were primarily responsible for establishing the close partnership that created the Atlanta Port.

Approximately 2,000 commercial shipments come through the Port of Atlanta each year.  The
shipments include tropical fish, pet birds, mammals, seashells, trophies, and reptiles.  Inspections requested outside normal cargo office hours (8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday) or on Federal holidays will incur additional fees. By appointment, an inspector is available for weekend,  holiday, and after hours inspections.  A 48-hour inspection notice must be given for live wildlife shipments.   Inspectors at the Atlanta Port handle several satellite Customs Ports of Entry, advising and training US Customs personnel on wildlife shipment inspection requirements.  This cooperation allows the Service to better regulate the importation and exportation of wildlife and wildlife products.
