                2004 Poultry Production and Summary

Puerto Rico value of sales from eggs and chickens (excluding broilers) totaled
$16,713,000 in 2004, down 10 percent from 2003 according to the 
Federal/Commonwealth of Puerto Rico Agricultural Statistics Service. Value of 
sales from eggs totaled $16,067,000, down 10 percent from 2003. Average price 
per dozen in 2004 was $0.838, down from $0.943 in 2003. Value of chickens sold 
for slaughter in 2004 was $646,000,down 11 percent from 2003.

The combined value of U.S. production from broilers, eggs, turkeys, and the
value of sales from chickens in 2004, was $28.9 billion, up 24 percent from the
$23.3 billion in 2003.  Of the combined total, 71 percent was from broilers, 18
percent from eggs, 11 percent from turkeys, and less than 1 percent from 
chickens. Value of all egg production in 2004 was $5.30 billion, down 1 percent
from the $5.33 billion in 2003.  Egg production totaled 89.1 billion eggs, up 2 
percent from the 87.5 billion eggs produced in 2003. In 2004, all eggs averaged
71.4 cents per dozen, compared with 73.2 cents in 2003. The value of sales from
chickens (excluding broilers) in 2004 was $58.0 million, up 21 percent from the
$47.8 million a year ago.  Prices averaged 5.8 cents per pound, compared with 
4.9 cents in 2003.
