Description:

Abstract:

This data set reports the percentage of infants who were delivered preterm (less than 37 weeks) in the United States, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. There are 1995-1999 rates for nine demographic groups: American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, Black or African American, White, Hispanic or Latino, mother's age 10-19, mother's age 20-29, mother's age 30-39, mother's age 40-54, and all groups combined. The race category for infants is determined for statistical purposes based on the race of the mother as reported on the birth certificate. Statistics for counties, States, and the nation are included. The national statistics were calculated from data for the fifty States, the District of Columbia and five U.S. dependent areas (American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands).

Purpose:

These data are intended for geographic display and analysis at the national level, and for large regional areas. The data should be displayed and analyzed at scales appropriate for 1:2,000,000-scale data. No responsibility is assumed by the National Atlas of the United States in the use of these data.

The county, State, and national spreadsheets containing preterm infant delivery rates were loaded into Microsoft Excel. Values for "No Population" were changed to -77777, values for "No events" were changed to -88888, and values for "Insufficient data" were changed to -99999. The FIPS code 12025 was changed to 12086. Extra blank spaces that proceeded the numbers were deleted. The resulting files, one for counties, one for States, and one for the nation were saved to dBase IV files. The national statistics were transposed to list rates by demographic group.
