Rural Abandoned Mine Program (RAMP)
(An effort from interested Alabama conservation agencies has continued to try
to get this program refunded.)
Through RAMP, NRCS provides technical and financial assistance
to landusers for the reclamation, conservation and development
of eligible abandoned coal-mined lands. Its purpose is to protect
people and the environment from the adverse effects of past coal
mining and promote the development of soil and water resources
of unreclaimed land for beneficial use.
RAMP funds come from reclamation fees collected under provisions
of Section 402(a) of Public Law 95-87. Abandoned or inadequately
reclaimed coal mine lands that existed before August 3, 1977,
are eligible for RAMP. Approximately 111 contracts on 1,300 acres
at a cost of $6,212,000 have been reclaimed.
