Nirenberg's notes read "What may be expected in the future? One hesitates to predict future events, but one must. As an eminent virologist, Salvatore Luria, has stated 'the impact of science on human affairs imposes on its practitioners an inescapable responsibility." Nirenberg expressed the meaning of this responsibility in the now famous Science editorial, "Will Society Be Prepared?"
