Image Name: |
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) -- Lower Back
|
Image Description: |
This Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan shows an image taken from the lower torso of a human. Of interest for the investigation "Magnetic Resonance Imaging After Exposure to Microgravity" were the muscle groups of the lower back, encircled red in the photo. In between the two larger muscles, the psoas muscles, the vertebrae is visible. The other two (smaller) muscles are the intrinsic lower back muscles. Both muscle groups are important for upright posture and locomotion. Because these muscle groups are not used in microgravity, scientists study changes in volume and composition after space flight.
