ks-crop-weather State Kansas Crop Weather Issue KS-CW0320 Released: May 19, 2003 Agricultural Summary: Widespread storm activity limited fieldwork last week to 3.6 days for the State average. Tornado and wind damage, heavy hail, and flooding were reported in a number of counties. Precipitation ranged from a few hundredths in the most northerly counties to as high as 5.97 inches in Chautauqua County and 8.26 inches in Meade County. Rainfall was badly needed in a number of dryland wheat areas where wheat conditions improved somewhat. Statewide, topsoil moisture is rated 4 percent very short, 7 percent short, 71 percent adequate, and 18 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is rated 13 percent very short, 29 percent short, 50 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus. Field Crop Report: Wheat condition is reported to be 6 percent very poor, 14 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 39 percent good, and 12 percent excellent. Wheat heading continued to make excellent progress and 88 percent of the wheat is headed, compared to 76 percent last year and 80 percent for the 5-year average. Insect infestation reports indicate 68 percent of the wheat with none, 24 percent with light infestation, 7 percent moderate, and 1 percent with severe infestation. Several counties reported stripe rust, wheat streak, or tan spot. Wilson County had several reports of wheat smut. Statewide, 90 percent of the corn is planted, compared with 93 percent for last year and 91 percent for the 5-year average. Corn emergence is 62 percent, compared with 66 percent for both last year and the 5-year average. Corn condition is rated 2 percent poor, 41 percent fair, 53 percent good, and 4 percent excellent. Twenty-five percent of the soybeans have been planted, compared to 25 percent last year and 39 percent for the 5-year average. Eleven percent of soybeans have emerged, compared to 13 percent last year and 19 percent for the 5-year average. Fifteen percent of the sorghum has been planted, compared to 20 percent for last year and 22 percent for the 5-year average. Five percent of sorghum has emerged, compared to 9 percent last year. Five percent of the sunflowers have been planted, compared to 6 percent last year and 9 percent for the 5-year average. Twenty-four percent of the first cutting alfalfa has been harvested, compared to 15 percent last year and 36 percent for the 5-year average. Cotton planting is about 10 percent completed in the Southwest portion of the State and about 15 percent planted in South Central Kansas. Condition in the Southwest is mostly good while the South Central reported 25 percent fair and 75 percent good. Pasture and Range Report: Range and pasture conditions are rated 13 percent very poor, 23 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 25 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Stock water supplies also improved and are rated 7 percent very short, 21 percent short, 66 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus. Feed grain supplies are mostly unchanged and are rated 4 percent very short, 19 percent short, 75 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies are rated 7 percent very short, 28 percent short, 64 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus.
