Statement of Significance (as of designation - June 29, 1989):
The Chautauqua Institution began in 1874 as a Methodist Sunday School teacher's assembly and became one of the most popular educational instututions in America, often offering innovative secular programs before schools of higher education accepted similar ideas. The movement began and grew in a wooded area on the shore of Lake Chautauqua in a district which retains a remarkable degree of architectural integrity, particularly the fanciful wooden cottages of the end of the 19th century.
