Interests
Dr. Gillespie grew up in a military family and cultivated his
interest in science through reading about animals in encyclopedias.
In high school, he was turned on to science by his teacher's
lessons on microbiology. During his college years, Dr. Gillespie
found that he loved the labs and coursework in organic
chemistry, biochemistry, and anatomy. He acknowledges that his
surgical hand-eye coordination came from his artistic mother and
woodworking father. As a surgeon, Dr. Gillespie studies
anatomical pathology and works to relate it to molecular and
genetic events at the cellular level. He is also interested in chip
technology as it influences the treatment of wound healing.
