General Resources : Taiwan

Taiwan was first settled by people from the southern Pacific region primarily where is now Indonesia, over many centuries ago. In 1590, a Portuguese ship passed by the island and its navigator called it Ilha Formosa, the beautiful island. In 1624, the Dutch built a fort on the island and defeated attempts by Spain to take over the island in 1628. The Dutch then developed the island into a major international trade post in East Asia. In 1662, Zheng Ch’eng-gong, a Ming dynasty loyalist, expelled the Dutch from the island and established a stronghold there for fighting against the Manchu. In 1683, the Manchu eventually conquered the island and then Taiwan officially became the territory of the Qing Court. In 1895, Japan forced the Qing Court to cede the island after winning the Sino-Japanese war. Taiwan was returned to the Chinese in 1945 when Japan was defeated in the Second World War.
