Troubleshooting USGS Listserver service “Invalid request”

When sending a command such as SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE to the list you may receive a message from the list server with the subject “Error Condition Re: Invalid request” and a message that states:

>This is a multipart message in MIME format.
Unrecognized request "THIS"

This is caused by a setting in Lotus Notes that you must change on your computer. In the Notes application, go to File -> Preferences -> Location Preferences. Click on the mail tab and change the field "Format for messages addressed to internet addresses:" to "Notes Rich Text Format"
