Statement of Significance (as of designation - June 30, 1960):
This 100-foot obelisk commemorates the burial of the only member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition to lose his life during the expedition. Floyd died on August 20, 1804, most likely of appendicitis.

In 2001 and 2002 erosion control measures were taken to keep the west and south banks from washing away. Lewis and Clark ceremonies were held in honor of Sergeant Floyd during 2004 Corps of Discovery II. http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr/travel/lewisandclark/ser.htm
