NATURE OF CASUALTY

Tug Relief overran her course in fog, towing vessel ashore. The captain of the barge dropped the anchors to keep the ship from drifting closer to shore. A line from the Relief was attached to the barge and kept taut to prevent the from vessel from swinging on her anchors during the incoming high tide. The tug Relief and Defiance later attempted to take the barge in tow, but only caused the ship to list to sea, where her holds were filled with water. Later, a hole was cut in the hull of the barge and her donkey engine, pumps, masts, spars and rigging were salvaged. Wreck Report
