Description:
Abstract:
This report provides taxonomic validation for 24 taxa of Odonata

(dragonflies) listed in contract 84069-4-2738 and for one taxon

(Enallagma laterale) listed in Federal Register 59(219):59010.

It includes designation of each taxon as (a) valid as listed, (b)

synonymous with another taxon, (c) potentially polytypic (e. g.,

the species name potentially consists of more than one species

or subspecies), or (d) impossible to evaluate without extensive

taxonomic study. It provides names and addresses of individuals

able to carry out taxonomic studies referenced in (d) above.

Corrections of errors in nomenclature are given. Accompanying the

report is a list, on both hard copy and diskette, summarizing the

taxonomic status of the 25 taxa.

Purpose: The report provides taxonomic validation for 24 taxa of Odonata.

Methodology:
Methodology_Type: taxonomic validation of odonate species
Methodology_Description:
Each taxon account includes the following:

1. Listed Scientific Name. Scientific name as listed in

the contract.

2. Correct Scientific Name. Current scientific name used

in the literature, including author and date of publication.

Parentheses are added to author/date when the species was

originally described in another genus.

This section also includes corrections of nomenclature and

synonymies, where my opinion differs from current published

literature. I explain the corrections under Synonyms and/or

Subspecies sections.

3. Common Name. Common name as listed in the contract. I

propose a different common name for one species.

4. Synonyms. Includes all junior and/or senior synonyms

for target taxon. Also includes subgeneric additions or

changes. I give current literature listings as well as my

professional opinion as to validity of name changes. Pertinent

quotes from original sources are given in 9-point type.

5. Subspecies. Includes all current described

subspecies, if any. Also includes discussion of possible

synonymy of target taxon. Original illustrations of characters

for some taxa are given here when I discuss possible synonymy of

target taxon.

6. Diagnostic illustrations. I include references to

illustrations of target taxa to aid in their identification. All

references to the literature have been checked by me, and

plate/figure legend numbers are given, with a brief description

of the figure (e.g., "appendages of A", or "frontal view of

head"). I also provide original illustrations of diagnostic

characters for taxa (e.g., Enallagma laterale) that are poorly

figured in the literature.

7. Potential Subspecies. Indicates new subspecies yet to

be described, if any. Accounts of species variability are given

here.

8. Authority best suited for further scientific work on

this taxon. Includes names and addresses of researchers I

consider qualified to conduct future taxonomic work on target

taxon. I have been unable to provide estimates of time and

funding necessary to solve taxonomic problems. This is because

it is almost impossible to predict the success rate of such

studies. Most future analyses will involve further collections

of adults and larvae of target specimens from as many sites as

possible. Such recommendations are given under Subspecies

accounts for some taxa.

9. Reference(s). Includes full literature citations used

for each taxon account.

Nomenclatural opinions described herein reflect evidence

from the literature and comparison (when possible) with loaned

material or specimens in my personal collection. As a general

rule, most Odonatists, including myself, are not in favor of

describing subspecies. An exception is F. L. Carle, who has

introduced several new subgenera, species, and subspecies names

of Gomphidae into the literature. Knowledge of population

dynamics is lacking for members of the family. Many species may

show high site fidelity, resulting in gradual differences

(clines) in pattern and/or morphology among various

populations. It is of personal preference whether such local

populations be named, but my opinion is not to do so.
