Dragonflies & Damselflies (Order Odonata)
Dragonfly ancestors, the Protodonates first appeared over 325 million years ago, before even the earliest cockroach. Another primitive dragonfly ancestor, Meganeuropsis permiana that lived during the Permian (280 million years ago), had a 2-ft wingspan! Unfortunately, the big dragonfly ancestors didn't survive the Permian mass extinction where almost 90% of species on Earth went extinct. The agile and voracious dragonflies and damselflies we know today were left in their place and Florissant is one of a few Cenozoic fossil localities to have them.
