SCIENCE HIGHLIGHTS – October 2005 Frey and Students Seek Age Variations in Mars Lowlands GSA Presentation Reveals Unusually Young Basement in Only One Area Global studies of the lowlands on Mars have shown that the buried basement (below the smooth, relatively crater-free plains) is nearly as old as the highlands of Mars. But these studies only revealed the average age of the basement. Recently, Herb Frey and students Kristen Fristad, Gilbert DeSoto and Robin Lazrus have combined work over two years to address the question of whether different parts of the lowlands of Mars might have different ages (and, possibly, different processes of formation). Frey reported their results at the recent Geological Society of America meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah. Counts of visible and buried craters (revealed by MOLA elevation data) in different individual areas in the northern lowlands of Mars (colored areas in figure at right) are plotted in cumulative frequency curves (cumulative number larger than a given diameter per million square kilometer vs diameter) as shown in the figure at the left. Most of these curves group together at middle diameters, indicating similar cratering ages. Two that fall below the others are from the western (brown) and eastern (orange) parts of a region called Acidalia. From such curves it is possible to pick off a crater retention age at any given diameter. Here N(100) = the cumulative number of visible and buried craters > 100 km diameter per million square kilometers is used. Most areas (right) have N(100) ~ 10, the same as the average age of the lowlands [shown in the bracket]. Amazonis is distinct, with N(100) = 5 and 2 (much younger crater retention ages). Amazonis may have had a history very different from the other areas. Herb Frey is Chief of the Planetary Geodynamics Laboratory (Code 698). His main research focus is the early crustal evolution of the Moon, Mars and Earth. Every summer he works with students of all ages, providing them opportunities to do real research, most of which is later presented at meetings or published. She was part of the NASA Academy program during the summer of 2005, and mapped and measured craters in the yellow areas above.
