Awards Ceremony Honors Customs Inspectors Commissioner Kelly's Message
(12/21/1999)Yesterday afternoon Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers and I conferred the U.S. Customs Service's Exceptional Service Award on Senior Inspector Mark Johnson and Inspectors Diana M. Dean, Mike Chapman, and Dan Clem for their outstanding conduct while on duty last week at Port Angeles in the State of Washington. Their vigilance and swift pursuit of a fleeing suspect prevented dangerous material, including timing devices and other bomb making components, from entering the United States. Their actions may have prevented a tragedy too horrible to contemplate as we enter the holiday season. A standing room only audience filled the Customs Headquarters auditorium to witness the medal ceremony. The audience listened to the inspectors describe how they do their job on a daily basis, as well as the circumstances that led to this important arrest. The audience members all stood to recognize the inspectors with sustained applause. At one point, a reporter asked me whether the awarding of medals so soon after the incident at Port Angeles was designed to send a message to would-be terrorists. Certainly, but that's only part of it. The medal ceremony also sends a message to the public at-large about the important work of the Customs Service and the quality of our personnel. These inspectors demonstrated in a very concrete way that the Custom Service employs some of the best law enforcement officers in the land. They showed they were smart, attentive and fast on their feet. A suspect is in custody and America breathes a little easier as a result. Thanks to the staff of the Office of Information Technology, this Commissioner's Message is being sent electronically today to all Customs employees, everywhere, simultaneously for the first time. It is only fitting that the message be one of pride and gratitude for what you do for your country. Wishing you a joyous holiday and a safe Year 2000, Raymond W. Kelly Commissioner |
