Issue: Migrants are often considered to be a group at high risk for HIV-infection. In the vietnamese medical association overseas, we have built up an AIDS Prevention Project for the vietnamese community overseas, which proves that the solution for the HIV-epidemic can come from within the community itself. Description: there is at the moment a rapid increase of HIV-infections in Vietnam. In the vietnamese medical association overseas, to tackle this problem and raise awareness among our fellowcountrymen overseas, we have launched an Aids Prevention Project, specifically adapted to the culture of vietnamese immigrants. Vietnamese physicians, dentists & pharmacists overseas are functioning as cultural MEDIATORs and often communicate via an Internet discussion forum. The Project began with the launching of a large-scale Media campaign with articles in vietnamese newspapers and talks on TV and radio shows in California. In the near future, musical videos will serve as a channel for diffusion of HIV-prevention messages, and well-known artists as Multiplyers of messages for vietnamese people both in Vietnam and abroad. The next step will be the realization of a predeparture prevention program for people with risk behaviour who often return to Vietnam. Results: this project has already been well received by the vietnamese press overseas and has found much support among vietnamese physicians abroad.
