Predeparture Workshop for Ministry of Higher Education Scholarship Recipients at the US Embassy
The Charge D'Affaires at the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi, Mr. Martin Quinn, welcomed 70 students, their families, and Ministry of Higher Education officials to the US Embassy on Wednesday August 15, 2007. They attended a pre-departure workshop designed to prepare students for their upcoming travels to the U.S. The Public Affairs Officer, Mr. Steven Pike, congratulated students on receiving scholarships to the USA. The students received instructions on how to apply for visas, as well as how to travel, pack, and what to expect at the port of entry. The presentation also covered academics, housing, course registration and the roles of academic advisers and international student advisers. Students also learned about culture shock and adaptation, and received an explanation of the stages students usually go through when they enter a new environment. The workshop concluded after showing the "Gulf Students in the USA" DVD, a unique video about living and studying in the USA from the perspective of Gulf students who are now studying there.
