Abstract This polygon coverage contains information about the location of soil hydrologic in the Albemarle-Pamlico drainage basin study area. The information is based on STATSGO data base, and is presented in a digital map with a scale of 1:250,000. coverage was developed for use in analysis of regional water quality issues. Descriptors: soil, soil hydrologic group, water quality. 2. Applications that use this data The coverage was developed for use in analysis of regional water quality issues. 3. Attribute discussion The item HYDGRP is coded to reflect four basic soil hydrologic groups with the f basic characteristics. HYDGRP A Well drained soils, such as deep sands, deep loesses, aggregated soils. Mi infiltration rate (mm/hr) in the range of 8 to 12. B Medium we-drained soils such as shallow loess and sandy load. Minimum infiltration rate in the range of 4 to 8 mm/hr C Medium porrly-drained soils such as many clay loams, shallow sandy loams, s low in organic matter, or soils high in clay content. Minimum infiltration rate 4 mm/hr. D Poorly-drained soils such as swelling soils, heavy plastic clays, and certa saline soils. Minimum infiltration rate of 0 to 1 mm/hr. Soils with hydrologic characteristics coded as a combination of the above major have a mix of the characteristics of the major classes. see Musgrave, GW and Holtan, NH, 1964, Infiltration, Section 12, p.12-26, in Han Applied Hydrology--A compendum of Water-resource technology, edited by Ven Te Ch McGraw-Hill Book Company, New York. 4. Procedures used to create or automate data Soils -- This coverage was based on the SCS STATSGO 1:250,000 Soil Association m Virginia and North Carolina. The Virginia version was obtained from the USGS VA office and the NC version was obtained from the NC Center for Geographic Informa Analysis. The STATSGO data base contains multiple attributes describing soil as characteristics. Soil hydrologic groups was chosen as the attribute for the ALB map" because it is an attribute used by and familiar to many of the federal, sta county, and local jurisdictions in making soil-related management decisions. Each polygon in the two soils coverages is identified by a unique number, such a or "VA053". Each polygon i the database also has one or more soil hydrologic gr characteristics. Where there is more than one, the database also contains infor about the percent of that polygon's aea associated with the various soil hydrolo groups. Each polygon was coded as predominantly one (or in some cases two, desi for example as "A/D") soil hydrologic group- either A (well-drained), B (medium well-drained), C (medium poorly drained) , or D (poorly-drained). When this coding was completed for the two individual state soil maps, each stat was clipped in ARC INFO using the clip command and the ALBE 1:24,000-derived bou coverage (/bgis/subbasin/albe.24kbnd). The maps were projected to a common proj (Albers, -96 central meridian--the projection recommended by the USGS NAWQA Nati Synthesis). 5. Revisions made to data (revision number, date, description) (Number each revision starting with 1. and describing the changes associated with that revision. Different versions of spatial data may have different results in analysis. Need to pass this information along to the user.) 6. Reviews applied to data (review type, date, person, description) (Spatial data ready to be documented and placed in a library must go through some in-house review. Review should include inspection of the LOG file for completeness and conformance to the steps described in this narrative, verification of table and column/item identities and definitions, validity of the reference data sets and citations, and review of any additional quality assurance measures performed on the data that may be required in standard Spatial Data Automation Guidelines.) 7. Related spatial and tabular data sets and programs (The identity and location of data sets or tables that may be related to the basic feature attribute tables. These include symbol lookup tables, additional tables that might contain extended definitions, like county names to match county numbers. Be sure to identify what items or columns one can use to relate on.) 8. References cited (In bibliographic reference form) 9. Notes
