Hill /signed/ Assistant Chief Hydrologist for Operations Subject: Recommended Training for Personnel Flying Snow Missions The U.S. Geological Survey Associate Director for Operations has recommended that personnel involved in flying snow missions be offered the 12-hour avalanche awareness portion of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service's (NRCS) Snow Survey Training. This avalanche awareness instruction is provided once a year by NRCS. Next year, the training will be held in Bend, Oregon, during the week of January 10, 1999. There is no charge for the training, but travel and per-diem costs are the responsibility of the employer. Participation is limited to space available. Persons interested in attending should contact the Bureau Aviation Manager, Burma Campbell at 404-679-7046 for additional information. This recommendation resulted from the Office of Aircraft Services review of several DOI helicopter accidents that occurred during snow operations. Distribution: A, B, FO, PO, DC.
