Portuguefe. ¦ TheSe conquerors, who at their firft ar- rival in India had advanced with the utmoft intrepidity and moft amazing celerity, and had purSued a long and dangerous career with a rapidity which nothing could flop ; who were fo well accuftomed to ads of heroifm, that they performed the moft arduous enterprifes with eafe ; thefe conquerors, I Say, when they were attack- ed by the Dutch, at the time that their whole empire, grown too large and tottering under its own weight, was tumbling to ruin on all fides, displayed none of thofe virtues which have laid the foundation of their power. When they were difpoffeffed of a fort, driven out of a kingdom, or difperfed in conféquence of a defeat, they fhould have fought an afylum among their brethren, and ihould have rallied under Standards that had hitherto been invincible ; either to put a flop to the progreSs of the enemy, or to recover their fettle- ments : but fo far were they from forming a réfoïution fo generous, that they folicited fome employment, or penfion, from thofe very Indian princes whom they had fo often infulted. Thofe who had contraded a habit of effeminacy and idleneSs above the reft, re- treated to Timor, which, being a poor ifland, where no works of induftry were carried on, would fcreen them, they thought, from the purfuit of an enemy intent upon ufeful conquefts. They were however de- ceived. In the year 1613 they were driven from the town of Cupan by the Dutch, who found a fort there, which they have ever fince garrifoned with fifty men.
