The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) plays a lead role in providing bilateral American assistance to Timor-Leste, a new nation struggling to establish a democratic state with an open and free economy.
As the "new country of the new millennium," Timor-Leste faces serious challenges. USAID's programs in Timor-Leste focus on accelerating economic growth; strengthening democracy and governance; and improving the health of the Timorese people, especially women and children at greatest risk.
