OBJECTIVE: To evaluate Erythematous Candidiasis (EC) in asymptomatic HIV-reactive patients (aHIV Pt). METHODS: Clinical follow-up and stomatological control of 105 aHIV Pt was made during 8 months. Dental-eye photograph was taken and culture performed for those lesions suspected of BC. Nystatin and/or gentian violet were administered locally to confirmed cases, while severe ones were treated orally with Ketoconazole. RESULTS: EC shows as a diamond-like reddish spot (72%) or as "patches" (28%) in the median and back rash before the papillae vellate, causing disappearance of filiform papillae (58% of the cases), in the hard palate (49%), in the soft palate (42%) and in the jugal mucosa (12%). More than 1 site was found in 65 Pt. Only 3 Pt showed evolution towards pseudomembranous candidiasis 8 months later. CONCLUSION: EC was the only clinical manifestation found in the 105 aHIV Pt studied. Early diagnosis may be useful as an early clinical marker; likewise, early treatment may delay evolution towards pseudomembranous candidiasis, which involves greater severity.
