November stages at all stations in this river district continued very low during November ancl not materially
different from tlie low stages of October. The Merced was slightly higher and the SnnJoaquinslight81ylower than
in October, but tlie clianges were not considerable. One general rain in moderate amount fell in these wat,ersheds
on the 10th. It was foUowecl by a small rise in the hlerced, but no chtxnge occurred in other streams of the district.

above tlie low stages that obt,ainecl prior t,o the rains. Rains were also general in the Feather-Yuba and
American watersheds, resulting in sliarp rises in those streams, but, like t,he Sacramento, they receded steadily
after t,he 10th of tlie mont,li, ant1 at its close t,lie eEect,s of t,lie rainfall were barely apparent.
Some snow fell in the high ranges of tlie Sierra Nevadn
during t81ie month, but it resulted in no appreciable rise. Navigation durinz the month was uninterrupt,ecl.
Lower San Joapin uxrtershed.-Some rain fell in this
watershed during tlie mont,li, but not in sufficient aniourit,s to mat.erially affect the average stages, which were
slightly above those of October.
RELATION OF RAlNFALL TO YIELD OF MILK.

I n Bulletin No. 233, of the College of Agriculture, Uni- versity of California, there is given the results of three
gears’ work by the Ferndale (Humboldt County, Cal.) C ow-Testing Associntion. The Bulletin is written by
Prof. Leroy Anderson, in charge of Dairy Industry, and contains much that is interesting regarding t,lie regular
and economic testing of cows for tlie production of milk

is taken as the cow’s monthly production. No record, however, is kept of tlie cow’s feed. The Eel River liinds, occupied by the Ferndale associa-

of the State. The rains are heavy in the winter season, and it is the custom to have most of the cows dry at that
time. It is found that the annual rainfall has important bearing in interpreting the records. The recipitation of

below normal. In spite of the great decrease in rainfall
during tlie last two years and its resultant effect upon grazing and feed couditions in general, the average pro-
duction of milk and fat increased.
It would be most interesting to compare the relative yields of milk and butter fat in different sections of the
State in connection with rainfall departures from normal
conditions.
