Description: Stout perennial up to 4 feet (1.3 meters) in height. Stems are erect and sometimes branched. Leaves are blue-green and wax-like, heart shaped and clasping, less than 2 inches (5 centimenters) long, alternately arranged and crowded on one stem. Flowers are yellow, two lipped, with an orange, hairy center, 1 to 1-1/2 inches (2.5 to 3.5 cm ) long; having a long spur resembling a snapdragon flower. Seeds are round, 1/2 inch (1.2 centimeters) in diameter, dark brown to black, with a papery circular wing. Reproduces by seed and creeping root system. Distribution: Confirmed infestations are currently less than one acre (0.2 hectares) on public lands managed by the Redding Field Office in Trinity County. Habitat: Native to the Mediterranean. Found along roadsides and on rangelands. Agressively invades native plant communities. Non-palatable to most herbivores. Difficult to control. Control methods include cultural, chemical and mechanical. Flowering Period: May to August, depending on the elevation. |
