Five Teams Cited on First Day of Center Awards

A TEAMS OCI Mitigation team, a center internal control team, the IT Security Certification and Accreditation team, the 90th Anniversary planning team and the VPP 2007 Recertification team all earned Center Team Awards during a ceremony Tuesday at the Reid Center.

It was the first of three days of Center Team awards.

The Organizational Conflicts of Interest Mitigation tiger team, led by Susan McClain, reviewed the potential conflicts when contractor Swales and Associates was purchased by ATK, which was already a prime subcontractor at Langley.

According to the citation, the team "assessed all aspects of the contract, reviewed all 97 task orders, interviewed all of the task monitors, interviewed senior leadership, implemented mitigation strategies when required and developed a strategy for maintaining an increased OCI diligence."

Besides McLain, members included Cornelius O'Connor and Michael Mark.

The Langley Internal Control team, led by Kerry Christian, baselined internal controls to help the center meet audit requirements and certification needs set by the Office of Management an Budget.

Its controls helped NASA Headquarters strengthen agency internal financial control.

Additional members included Dorian Derse of Jacob Sverdrup, James Ogiba of James Ogiba Co., Linda Henderson and Bernice Jones of Legacy, Cathleen Sisk of NCI Information Systems, Cathleen Norville of Raytheon and Marquetta Allen, Stacey Kilby, Eric Strand and Kathryn Thomson of Tessada and Associates.

The IT Security and Accreditation team was cited for completing the Herculean task of completing 39 plans involved in preparing the center's IT program for review by an independent third party, in accordance with an Office of Management and Budget dictum.

Led by Kendall Freeman, the team brought a body of IT education to Langley and created a better understanding of the center's IT systems.

Besides Freeman, the members were Anthony Arviola, Michael Bray, Debbie Cook, David Cordner, Archie Dimery, Virginia Dupuis, Maria Elliott, Dana Forrest, Lawrence Green. Jerome Hoerger, Debra Hurst, Lori Jones, Patrick Kenney, Michael Little, John Meyer, Calvin Mackey, Raleigh Perry, Nancy Shevlin, Milton Skolaut, Stephanie Stockum and William Von Ofenheim.

Other members included Kenneth Detweiler of Analytical Services; John Howard and Chandra Vemuru of Chugach Industries; Floyd Franklin and William Hass of EMCO Technologies; Bennie Nelson of NCI Information Systems; Gustaf Barkstrom, Wanda Barner, Roger Dubois, Michael Gulub, Scott Holbrook, Patricia Lloyd and Ronnie Lovell of Raytheon; and David Johnson and John Koenig of SSAI.

The 90th Anniversary Planning team worked on an October, 2007, celebration that culminated in an open house attended by about 24,000 people.

Co-led by Randy Cone and Gail Langevin, the team's members included Bob Allen, Donis Anders, Kathy Barnstorff, Glenn Brehm, Patricia Cowin, Charles Cramer Jr., Cheryl Cleghorn, Larry Cooper III, Lucille Crittenden, Greg Draughon, Mike Finneran, Lois Forbes, Karen Freidt, Elaine Gause, Carl Gerhold, Ivelisse Gilman, Edward Glaessgen, Sonia Herndon, Nancy Holloway, Jacob Houck, Lisa Jones, Donna Lawson, Joel Levine, Troy Merryfield, Gilda Miner, Joseph Sikora, Frank Quinto, Lisa Rippy, Rodney Russell, Kevin Shepherd, Katrina Townes-Young and Erik Vedeler.

Elizabeth Ward of Christopher Newport University also was a member.

The VPP Recertification team, led by Jose Caraballo, saw its work cited when inspectors from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration visited the center and left without finding a 90-day violation for the first time.

The team instituted a Job Hazard Analysis program and brought contractors more into the center's safety realm.
