Suburban cities exclude all metropolitan agencies associated with a principal city. Nonsuburban cities include law enforcement agencies in cities with less than 50,000 inhabitants that are not associated with a Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The number of violent crimes increased 0.4 percent in both suburban and nonsuburban cities.
Murder and nonnegligent manslaughter decreased 1.8 percent in suburban cities. However, in nonsuburban cities, murder and nonnegligent manslaughter rose 4.6 percent.
Robbery offenses increased 1.2 percent in suburban cities and 0.5 percent in nonsuburban cities.
Property crime decreased 1.4 percent in nonsuburban cities and 1.2 percent in suburban cities.
Motor vehicle theft declined 8.7 percent in suburban cities and 5.2 percent in nonsuburban cities.
Arson offenses decreased 6.6 percent in suburban cities and 3.4 percent in nonsuburban cities.
