Soprano Mihaela Buhaiciuc in Concert at Brookhaven Lab, June 14 Accompanied by Clarinetist Bogdan Scurtu and Pianist Mei Zhu

UPTON, NY - Romanian-born soprano Mihaela Buhaiciuc will appear in concert at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory on Wednesday, June 14, at noon in Berkner Hall. She will be accompanied by clarinetist Bogdan Scurtu and pianist Mei Zhu. Sponsored by Brookhaven Science Associates, the company that manages Brookhaven Lab, the concert is free and open to the public. All visitors to the Laboratory age 16 and over must bring a photo ID.

All three artists are doctoral candidates in Stony Brook University's (SBU) Music Department. In recent years, Mihaela Buhaiciuc has performed with the Stony Brook Opera. Buhaiciuc made her debut in 2000 at the National Opera House in Romania, and she has toured throughout Europe and the eastern U.S. A graduate of the Music Conservatory in Brasov, Romania, she was also the recipient of the Neumler Scholarship in 2003, while she pursued her master's degree in voice at SBU.

Romanian-born clarinetist Bogdan Scurtu has performed extensively throughout Europe, the U.S., and the Middle East. He is the winner of many prizes, including the First Prize at G. Georgescu International Memorial Competition in Romania in both 1996 and 1997, and, also in Romania in 1997, the First Mention at the State Olympic Competition for Music Performance. He obtained his bachelor's degree in clarinet performance from Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida, and his master's degree from Stony Brook University.

Born in Hangzhuo, China, pianist Mei Zhu has won many awards, including a fellowship at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the 2001 Howard Lebow Prize from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst (U-Amherst), and the Simms Fellowship from the Aspen Festival. She has performed with the Shanghai Symphonic Orchestra, and at Weill Hall in New York, among other prestigious venues. She earned a master's degree from U-Amherst.
