A socialist congressman who survived an attack by unidentified gunmen over the weekend said Monday he appealed to President Lucio Gutiérrez to ''halt the climate of violence'' in Ecuador.

Congressman Enrique Ayala escaped uninjured Saturday night when assailants in two cars shot at his vehicle, authorities said.

Police Gen. Jorge Poveda said investigators had few leads to work with.

Ayala told reporters that he received a call from Gutiérrez and that he told the president ``categorically that he has the obligation to halt the climate of violence.

Ecuador's socialist party, which holds three seats in the 100-seat unicameral legislature, had supported Gutiérrez's policies but announced Monday that it would take ``a neutral position.''
