NAFTA's Effects on International Wood Products Trade

Investigators:

Jeffrey P. Prestemon, Southern Research Station
Joseph Buongiorno, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Description:

The North American Free Trade Agreement took effect in January, 1994. Among NAFTA's predicted effects will be an increase in wood products trade among the United States, Canada and Mexico. Empirical questions regard how responsive is Mexico's import demand to import prices from the United States and Canada and, by extension, how important the agreement will be to North American markets. Other questions surround the effects of proposals to extend NAFTA to include all of the Americas, including the Caribbean. Two peer-reviewed papers have been published that analyze NAFTA's effects and the effects of NAFTA's expansion. Another manuscript, in the journal review process, analyzes the Agreement's effects on Mexican deforestation.
