Description/Abstract The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is an unprecedented trade agreement that provides rules, guidelines, and procedures for eliminating barriers to trade and investment between the United States, Canada, and Mexico.^It includes schedules for reducing and eventually eliminating tariff and nontariff barriers to trade, rules for converting nontariff barriers to trade barriers, rules for determining the origin of traded goods, provisions for facilitating investments, and exceptions to the general terms and conditions outlined in the text of the agreement.^The purpose of this paper is to discuss the opportunities for the United States` coal industry in Mexico.^This paper examines the Mexican coal industry, current and future coal use in Mexico, opportunities for US exports to Mexico, other coal-related export opportunities, and information sources on NAFTA implementation.
