This presentation will cover results of several studies to test the usefulness of prophylactic napping for sustaining performance during sleep deprivation; the efficacy of dextroamphetamine as a fatigue countermeasure in military aviators; and the efficacy of the new stimulant modafinil for overcoming the effects of sleep loss in helicopter pilots. A brief discussion of a new fatigue survey project will be included. In this new study, over 200 aviators are being surveyed to determine the extent of fatigue-related problems in the Army aviation environment. Finally, a very brief overview of in-flight physiological monitoring work will be shown.
