Dr. Paul Lowman

Dr. Lowman is a Geophysicist in the Geodynamics Branch of the Laboratory for Terrestrial Physics.His research areas are in Geology (igneous and metamorphic petrology, mining geology), Comparative planetology, Lunar Geology, Orbital remote sensing (photography, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence, imaging radar), Global tectonics, and early crustal evolution of the Earth.

He earned his B.S. from Rutgers University in 1953, and his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado in 1963. He worked for the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps from 1953-1955, then went on to the U.S.G.S. as a geological field assistant. He became a Consulting Geologist in 1958. In 1959 he joined NASA as an Aerospace Technologist in the Theoretical Studies Branch/ Planetology Branch. In l963 he was a lecturer at Catholic University. From l963-l964 he joined NASA Headquarters in planning Apollo and post-Apollo lunar exploration. In 1964 he taught lunar geology at Air Force Institute of Technology. In l970 he taught Geology of the Moon and Applications of Orbital Photography at Univ. of California, Santa Barbara. Since l974 he has been a Geophysicist here at GSFC. From 1978-1986 he taught Physical Geology, Regional Geology of North America, and Structural Geology at the University of Maryland. In l986 and l987 NASA Headquarters he was a member of Space Leadership Planning Group, and since 1988 he has been an Exploration Program Scientist.

Dr. Lowman is a member of the Geological Society of America, where he became a fellow in 1974. He is also a member of the American Geophysical Union, the Air Force Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Explorers Club.
