Commerce Secretary Visits Pacific Tsunami Warning Center

Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez visited NWS's Richard H. Hagemeyer Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, HI, on December 8. Hastings Hosts University of Kearney at Nebraska Aviation Department

Hastings, NE, Aviation Team co-leader and Journeyman Forecaster Jim Reynolds (standing) talks with students and staff from the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK) Aviation Sciences Department during their October 12 visit to the Hastings forecast office. In February 2006, WFO Hastings Aviation Team Leader Kurt Buffalo and Jim Reynolds made contacts with all of the Fixed Based Operators (FBOs) at the Hastings, Grand Island, and Kearney, NE, airports. The lone FBO at the Kearney Airport, Air Midway, is the sole provider of aircraft used by student pilots in the Aviation Sciences program at UNK. The presentation and office tour provided to the UNK Aviation Department was coordinated to occur with the resumption of classes and flight instruction at UNK during the Fall 2006 term. Western Region Lends a Hand with Science Teachers Conference

The NWS Western Region including staff from the Salt Lake City forecast office provided assistance at the recent National Science Teachers Association Regional Conference in Salt Lake City (December 7-9). In addition to the exhibit, Dennis Cain from the NWS Southern Region gave a presentation on Jetstream-An Online School for Weather. Baltimore-Washington Media Partners Visit Forecast Office

On December 19, local media partners attended the Baltimore-Washington forecast office's Annual Winter Weather Media Workshop. Mt. Holly Achieves Outreach Milestone

Robert Wanton, general forecaster and education outreach focal point, made his 100,000th individual outreach presentation on November 3 at the Burlington County Institute of Technology in Medford, NJ. Student, Anthony Rossi, was recognized as the ‘100,000th individual,’ and received a four-inch rain gage during the group presentation to twenty seven students and eleven adults. The CBS-TV affiliate in Philadelphia taped portions of the event, which subsequently aired on the Noon and 4 p.m. news. Robert has made 1102 outreach presentations dating back to 1984.
