Congressman Kline Reaffirms His Strong Support For Israel

Kline: The United States is a Steadfast Ally and Partner in Peace With Israel

January 11, 2009

WASHINGTON – The following statement is excerpted from a January 11, 2009, address by Congressman John Kline to the Jewish Community Relations Council:

“We are in the midst of a critical time for the nation of Israel and her citizens. Once again, our friend and ally finds herself in the midst of a conflict she did not instigate and from which she cannot escape. The unconscionable and unprovoked attacks by Hamas in recent months left Israel with no choice but to respond.

“Time and time again Israel has demonstrated humanitarian compassion for her neighbors. Just this week – in the midst of conflict – Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced the establishment of a ‘humanitarian corridor’ – opening areas in Gaza for periods of time to allow the Palestinian population to equip itself and receive aid.

“But despite their best efforts, Israel cannot unilaterally achieve stability in a troubled region. We must be unequivocal in communicating to Israel – and her enemies – that the United States is a steadfast ally and partner in peace.

“On Friday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution recognizing Israel’s right to defend herself against attacks from Gaza, reaffirming the United States’ strong support for Israel, and supporting the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. This is an important and sincere gesture, but resolutions alone will not achieve an effective resolution to the current conflict – nor a long-term solution for securing a lasting peace.

“The world community must hold accountable those nations who would provide aid and comfort to Hamas and other terrorist organizations. Until these bad actors are held responsible and subjected to the appropriate repercussions, there will be no peace in the Middle East.

“I pray for peace and pledge our support for whatever actions she must take to achieve it.”
