Summer Interns excel in Dryden programs
Special to the X-Press Students worked in the field of their choice this summer and learned how to apply what they are learning in school through three Dryden programs: the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program, the Dryden Summer Intern Program and a Dryden contractor program. WISE is offered to students of Spellman College, Atlanta, Ga. Summer internships and Dryden ASandM positions are awarded to outstanding students. Here is a listing of the students and their summer work: o Mica Ballton is a Spellman College sophomore who is majoring in physics. She studied instrumentation at Dryden with mentor Gina Branco. "I've learned a lot of things I can take back to school with me. I learned a new computer language and I learned how to write a test report," she said. o Natalie Davis is an ASandM Intern from West Virginia University, Morgantown, W. Va., is majoring in English and journalism. She worked with mentor Jay Levine for the third summer on Dryden's employee newspaper, the X-Press. o James Benjamin DeBoer is an ASandM Intern from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich. He is majoring in aerospace engineering and worked this summer in Dryden's Research Propulsion Branch with mentor Stephen Corda. "Coming to work at Dryden has been a great experience for me. The work I've done here has been very rewarding, and it's also nice to have so many things to do after hours," DeBoer said. o Jeannine Frock is an ASandM Intern from the University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio. She is purusing a degree in elementary education. She assisted mentor Michelle Davis, an aerospace education specialist in the Public Affairs, Commercialization and Education Office. o Dennis Ragsdale II attends Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott, Ariz. He is a Dryden summer intern seeking a degree in electrical engineering. At Dryden he worked with mentor Roy Tryon. "I've certainly learned quite a bit about web pages and Perl programming over the summer," he said. o Vijay Ramasurraumanian of the University of Illinois, Campaign, Ill., is a senior studying aeronautics and computer science. At Dryden, he worked on the Hyper X with mentor Ross Hathaway. "It was a fantastic experience for students to be able to work in real life engineering and see their projects go into support of a flight-related project," he said. o Vladi Weinstock of Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., is seeking a Master of Science degree in aerospace engineering. At Dryden, he worked in the Propulsion and Performance Branch with mentors Masashi Mizukami, John Orme and Neal Hass. "It is a unique opportunity to work on the hottest flight research projects currently underway. Work experience gained at this Center is virtually impossible to get anywhere else in the industry, and the friendly atmosphere created by everyone who works here instantly made me feel like a part of a larger team," he said. |
